Black lettering tattoo on the top of a foot, with a Mickey Mouse head outline beside the words Where Dreams Come True in lettering style.

Mickey Mouse outline and quote on the foot

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink outline of a Mickey Mouse head sits above the words WHERE DREAMS COME TRUE, written in capital letters with a hand-lettered, slightly wobbly line. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the design runs along the top of the foot near a thin gold chain. The photograph is taken straight on against a dark background, with the tattoo clearly readable.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Pargeter wanted the ears done first, which was typical of him. He said a crowd reads round shapes before it reads anything, and he was right, though I told him a seafront arcade needed a bit more than two circles. I drew them with a compass and a stub of chalk on the board above the cockle stall, two loops like spectacles that had given up. Then he stood in the drizzle with his cap pushed back and watched me letter the words beneath, one capital at a time.

My hand wobbled on the E, and the R leaned like it had been drinking on the way home. Pargeter wouldn't let me scrape it. 'Folk trust a thing done by hand,' he said. 'Nobody trusts a machine.' I didn't argue. I had trusted my hands for thirty years and they had never once let me down until that morning, and I was not about to blame them for the gulls shrieking over the rail.

A girl stopped in front of the board with a tin of coppers under her arm and sounded the letters out loud, the way children do when they've just learned to read and are proud of it. WHERE. DREAMS. COME. TRUE. She turned to her brother and asked whether that was really the place, and Pargeter, leaning on his stick, said the penny ticket got you through a mile of dark tunnel and out the other side into the lights. 'That's not a dream,' she said. 'That's a train.' Then she pushed her coppers across the counter anyway and went in holding her brother's sleeve.

I stayed until dusk, paint drying grey on my knuckles, and watched the lamps come on along the front one bulb at a time. The ears caught the light last of all, two dark rings against the board, and then the sign was the only thing lit on that whole stretch of pier, with its wobbly letters and its stubborn little mouse faces looking out over the sea as if they had never once doubted the arrangement.
