Circular quote tattoo around an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a foot held by two hands, with a quote written in a circle around the ankle. The thin, even linework forms the words in a continuous loop, and the lettering is set against the soft grain of the skin. The muted grey tones and plain wooden background keep the focus on the tattoo.

Old Mother Aske kept the hoopla stall at the back of Lammas Fair, and every evening she sat on her upturned crate and told the children the same thing: the fair had a door in it that did not open from the outside. The lads who ran the roundabouts laughed at her. They had walked the whole field in the rain and found only hedges and tarpaulin.

Her son Tom went looking anyway. He had been told that the hall of mirrors had a seventh glass, and that behind the seventh glass was the road home. He took a lamp and a ball of red wool and went in at dusk, while the generator coughed and the organ wound down.

Inside, every wall gave him back himself, thinner and paler, until he could not tell which Tom was the true one. He tied the wool to a nail and walked until the wool ran out. Then he sat down on the boards and wept, because the wool had only led him in a circle, back to the door he had entered by.

A voice behind the seventh glass said, "Walk the circle again, and say the words you were given." He had no words. He remembered his mother's crate, and what she always said when the children asked how to leave: "The only way out is through." He stood, walked the ring a second time, and pressed his palm to the glass where the wool ran through. The glass gave like cold water, and he stepped out onto the wet grass with the lamp still lit, and the fair was packing up around him as though he had been gone a minute.
