Mirrored antler tattoos on both forearms

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two matching antler tattoos curve up the inner and outer forearms, mirroring each other with the tines reaching towards the elbows. The antlers are drawn with shaded, dimensional form, with darker edges and lighter highlights suggesting a textured, sculpted surface. The image is in black and grey, with the wrists brought together at the bottom of the frame against a white shirt and blue jeans.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The antlers had hung above the byre door at Kinloch Farm for sixty years, and Nessa Pringle was the one balanced on the stepladder trying to lift them free. The tines caught her cardigan sleeve twice. A mouse shot out from the dust on the beam and vanished into the hay.

Old Ruaridh watched from a bale with his flask and his good tweed cap. He was the groom's grandfather and had opinions about everything, most of them correct. The pair, he told her, had come off two different stags, shot on the same October morning by two brothers who never spoke again after it. The brothers had argued over which of them had fired the killing shot, and the argument had outlived both of them. Their children had hung the antlers side by side, mirrored, like a pair of hands held out and not quite touching.

Nessa carried them across the yard on her hip and set them up on the tall oak easels by the dance floor. Then, without quite deciding to, she turned one of them round, so the points that had reached towards the elbows now reached towards each other above the empty space where the couple would stand. The band tuned up. The string lights came on. When the bride and groom stepped into the middle, the antlers threw one long shadow across the boards, shaped like a pair of raised arms. Ruaridh raised his flask to it and said nobody needed to know which brother had fired first.
