Stag head tattoo on the back of a hand
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A stag's head with branching antlers is tattooed across the back of the hand, with the face extending onto the middle finger. The linework is fine and dark, with stippled and shaded areas giving the fur, ears and muzzle volume. The piece is entirely black and grey on a plain, light background, and a small serif letter I sits on the index finger.

The stag was already standing among the rue and sage when you came out with the lantern, and it did not run. Its antlers caught the light and threw a tangle of shadow across the infirmary wall. Brother Cuthbert had stopped on the gravel path with his hood half up, and he lifted one hand the way you would to a child who has wandered near the well.

The hounds had given up at the river an hour before Compline. You had heard their voices fade toward the valley, then the horns, then nothing but the bell for the night office and the stream loud over its stones. Now the animal lowered its head to the sage and tore off a sprig with a sound like a small torn cloth, and the old abbot's rule came back to you word for word: whatever seeks the cloister is owed the cloister until the Chapter says otherwise.
Brother Cuthbert wanted the gate barred. You wanted the stag fed. In the end you did neither, and sat on the step with the lantern between your boots while the animal grazed and the moon cleared the wall. At matins you opened the great ledger, as you were bid, to write the night's business. Under the heading for guests and strays you wrote the only name the animal had earned, a single upright letter I, and beside it, smaller, the word held. When you looked up the stag had gone back into the dark of the orchard, and the sage was bent where it had stood.
