Stag and geometric triangles on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A stag's head with full antlers sits at the top of the forearm, above a line of nested outline triangles and a flock of small birds. The lower forearm shows a shaded woodland scene with pine trees and a triangle-in-circle symbol near the wrist. The tattoo is rendered in black and grey with soft gradients and fine detail, set against grass and a blurred background.

The rain had come down on Harrowby market since before the bells, and by noon the stallholders had stopped cursing it. Nan Hollis kept her wool under a sheet of oilcloth and her eyes on the lane, where a stag was walking towards her between the cabbage crates as if it had paid for a place.

Nobody had seen one come off the fell in daylight. It stopped at the cobbler's trestle, where three triangles had been chalked on a slate to show which boots were mended, and it lowered its head to the wet cloth. The cobbler, Tam Rudd, touched his awl to his forehead and then, because the rain was in his collar, asked the beast what it wanted. The stag looked at Nan. Its eyes were as dark as the pool under the mill.
"Bread," said the stag, though its mouth did not open. So Nan tore her loaf in two and set the half on the oilcloth, and the stag ate it slowly, the way a man eats when he is thinking. When it had finished it turned and walked back up the lane, and the birds that had been sitting along the gutters rose after it in a dark scatter, stitching the grey air into triangles as they went.
In the morning the market was dry and the cobbler's slate was gone. On Nan's stall lay a single antler, pale as peeled willow, and beside it a feather the rain had not touched. She never sold it. She hung it above her door, and whenever the wet came down off the fell she said, to nobody in particular, that the stag had been paid.
