Mirrored tribal fox pair in black and magenta
Mixed · Flash
Two stylised fox-like animals sit face to face in a mirrored composition, with bold, flowing tribal linework and solid filled areas. The left figure is rendered in black and the right in magenta, with a small red accent on the right figure's eye. The pale background keeps the two dark, curling tails and angular shapes clearly separated.

You reach the col just before the light goes, and the wind off the scree is already tugging at your sleeves. Below, the two foxes you have been following since the valley road circle the shelter stones, one drawn in soot and one in the bruised pink of dusk. They have been pacing that ring all afternoon, black tail and magenta tail, never once touching.

The old shepherd at the hut told you their story over sour cheese. Two kits were born on the same frost night under Scarth Nab, and their mother could carry only one down to the lower meadows. The other stayed on the pass, and the pass taught her to sit upright and watch the sky. Her sister learned to watch the valley lights instead. Every winter they try to meet halfway, and every winter the ridge keeps them apart.
You step out onto the snow between them. The black fox lifts a forepaw, and the magenta one lifts the same paw, so exactly that you realise their bodies are a mirror you could step through if you were quiet enough. You hold your breath. The red spark in the magenta eye flickers like a coal someone forgot to bank.
When you look again only one fox is there, its tail curled in a loop that closes around nothing at all. The hut lamp is lit far below. You take the path down, and the wind follows you, carrying two sets of pads, one sharp and one soft, pressing into the snow at the same time.
