Tribal dragon design with swirling tail
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink drawing of a dragon in a tribal style, shown in profile with its head facing left and a long body that curls down the page. The linework forms solid, flowing black shapes with white negative space, with spiral curls along the neck, flank and tail. Three small open circles sit at the lower end of the tail against a plain cream background.

The net had been in the water since Tuesday, and by the time Wenna Pascoe waded out to the breakwater on the ebb, it had drawn tight around something that was not a fish. The harbour master swore it was a drowned hawser. Her grandmother only said, 'Leave the knots alone, girl, and mind the tail.'

The creature lay coiled against the wall like a fern uncurling in reverse, its head a black crest of flame-shaped fins above the weed line. Its eye was yellow as lamp oil and it watched her hands without any hurry. The tail ran down into the green water and kept going, ridged in long scales that swept into spirals, the way the tide combs sand into ribs. Wenna worked the mesh loose one cord at a time, counting under her breath in Cornish the way her grandmother had taught her to count stitches.
When the last loop slid free, the dragon did not thank her. It lifted its head as high as the sea wall, breathed out a long grey breath that smelled of kelp and struck matches, and the fins along its neck rose and fell like sails turning in a narrow channel. Then it pushed off the stone and was gone, its tail the last thing to slide under, curling once more in a loop that sent three bubbles up through the shallows.
Her grandmother, who had seen a creature like it in 1947 and told nobody but her, watched the rings spread across the harbour mirror and nodded. 'That's it paid,' she said. 'Now you owe the sea a favour, and it will come looking for you when you least want it.' Wenna kept those three rings in her mind for years, small and round and perfectly still, long after the water had closed over them.
