Monarch butterfly on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two photographs show a monarch butterfly tattoo on the inner forearm, with wings spread and a thorax, head and antennae drawn in black. The wing veins and borders are outlined in black with soft grey shading, and small red dots sit along the wing edges. A third panel, a black box with white serif text, quotes a line about the butterfly and darkness.

The monarch found the car somewhere past the last petrol station, when the tarmac gave way to packed red grit and the heat began to shimmer off the salt flats. It came in through the open vent and settled on the sun visor, wings folded like a shut ledger, and for forty miles you pretended not to notice it.

Your brother Tomas always said monarchs carried a map in their heads, something older than roads or names. You had laughed at him on the phone the way you laughed at most things he said about insects. Now the butterfly opened its wings against the windscreen, black borders stitched with red dots like sparks on a cooling grate, and it seemed to be studying the road ahead as if it had already decided the way.
At a junction with no sign, only a rusted cattle grid and a lone mesquite, it lifted off and drifted west toward a grey line of hills. You stopped the car and told yourself you were checking the tyres. You stepped out into air that tasted of metal and watched the orange flicker grow smaller against the glare until it was only a suggestion of colour.
You took the left fork that afternoon, the one Tomas had sketched on a napkin years ago and you had never believed in. At the next crossroads a single paper-thin scrap of orange was pinned to a fence post, wings spread, perfectly still. You did not touch it. You simply waited there until the sun dropped behind the hills, the way he would have wanted you to.
