Monarch butterfly with lace on sternum
Neo-trad · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A large monarch butterfly with orange and black wings sits at the centre of the image, framed by a dark, ornamental shape with a small gem and fine black lace. Thin chains and feather outlines extend to either side, and the black shading gives the design depth. The butterfly is in full colour against mostly black and grey ornamentation, and the close crop centres the tattoo on the upper torso.

The queue at Puente Seco had stopped moving an hour before the sun did, and Teodora Ruiz kept her hand flat on the box in her lap as though it might lift off without her. Inside lay the mantilla her grandmother had worn to every christening in the valley, black as tar, stitched with a vine of chain beads that clinked whenever the bus hit a pothole. Two hundred metres ahead, a booth with a flickering strip light waited for her papers.

The officer who took them was younger than her eldest nephew and had a chipped front tooth. He turned the pages of her passport slowly, then looked at the box. "Anything to declare?" She said lace, and thought of the monarchs that had come drifting over the ridge all week, a slow orange river dropping onto fence posts to rest. Two had settled on her sleeve at dawn, and she had let them stay.
He lifted the lid. For a long moment nothing happened. Then the black lace stirred, two orange wings rose from it, and the officer stepped back with his hand half raised, as though to swat a wasp. Teodora said nothing. The strip light buzzed. The butterflies lifted past his shoulder, out through the open window and over the fence, south toward the ridge where the others were going.
He closed the empty lid and wrote something on her form. "Next," he called, and handed her papers back with a small, almost embarrassed nod. She was through, the box warm against her ribs, the chain beads ticking softly like a clock that had finally started again.
