Monarch butterfly with cast shadow on a leg

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A monarch butterfly with orange wings, black veins and white spots is tattooed on the side of a leg, appearing to hover above the skin. Shading and a dark cast shadow beneath the wings give the design a three-dimensional effect. Smooth colour blending on the wings contrasts with the plain skin and dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every late summer the orange butterflies came up off the marsh and drifted over the south wall of the Coldharbour kitchen garden, and Ada Penrose, who kept the gardener's book, wrote each date down in pencil. Her father said they were only passing through. Her grandmother said they were looking for a particular bush, and that a butterfly who found it would leave something behind.

The bush was a scruffy buddleia beside the water butt, grey with rain. One morning a monarch settled on the rusted hinge of the gate and would not go. Ada sat on an upturned bucket with her bread and watched it. When she shifted her hand, the wings tilted, and a dark shape slid across the flagstones, lying flat, as if the butterfly had dropped a coat on the ground and kept it hanging in the air.

Her grandmother had told her the shadow was the part of a traveller that stays behind. Ada didn't believe it until the butterfly lifted, turned over the wall toward the sea, and the shadow remained, pressed into the warm stone beneath the buddleia. Ada laid her palm over it. It was cool, as shade always is, and it did not move when the sun did.

The next spring the buddleia was in flower, and the dark patch was still there under it, the way a wet stone keeps its colour. Ada never cut the bush back. When visitors asked why that corner was left wild, she told them it was keeping a place for something already on its way home.
