Pink bow, winged heart and roses on lower back

Neo-trad · Back · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo covers the lower back and centres on a large pink bow above a winged heart with a lattice pattern. Outlined roses sit either side, with black and grey leopard print and pink ribbon banners curling beneath. Bold black linework defines the forms, and the bow and ribbons use pink shading with highlights, while the roses and leopard print remain in black and grey.

Dearest Tobiah,

The ribbon order for the Marchioness came up from the coast on Tuesday, four hundred yards of rose-pink silk, and I have not slept properly since. She wants bows the width of a cart wheel, pleated the way the old weavers did before the mill closed, and she wants them stitched over the spotted cloth the southern traders sell us, the leopard stuff nobody in the capital will admit to buying. Mother says it is vulgar. Mother also bought two yards of it for her cushions, so I have stopped listening to Mother.

Ottoline came to the shop on Thursday with her paint box and a drawing of a heart with wings, a lattice thrown over it like a net over a bird. She said it was the sign she painted on the ferry, the one that kept the drowning men from going down into the harbour water, and she would not say more than that. I told her the Marchioness would never pay for a sailor's charm. She laughed and said the Marchioness had been carrying one since she was fifteen and had simply never been told its name.

I finished the bow yesterday, pinned it to the board with thirty brass tacks, and sat looking at it until the lamp guttered. Pink on pink, with the shadow folded in like the underside of a petal. Tomorrow the carriage comes for it. I have kept one offcut, a length of the leopard cloth with a single rose stitched at the corner, and I am posting it to you under this letter so you have something of home in the mountain barracks. Keep it dry. The mountain air takes the colour out of everything.

Your loving sister, Wren
