Money, roulette, rose and revolver half sleeve

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

Two photographs show a half sleeve on a man's upper arm and shoulder, with his head cropped out of frame. The design includes fanned banknotes with a portrait, a roulette wheel, a curling musical staff with notes, a shaded rose, a revolver and spent bullets. The work is rendered in black and grey with soft gradients and fine detail, and the second view shows the sleeve from the side.

Fenwick had played the upright in the Ardent Rose for eleven years, and nobody had ever told him to stop. Tonight the air was thick with cigar smoke and the hush before a wheel settles, and Mrs Oduya kept checking the clock above the bar as though it owed her money.

The stranger arrived at half eleven in a coat too good for the weather. He fanned four hundred pounds across the green baize like a hand of cards, then laid a revolver beside it, its cylinder swung open, two brass rounds lying loose in front of it. 'Red,' he said. 'All of it.' Nobody argued. The croupier, a boy who still wore his spectacles on a cord, spun the wheel with a flick that made the brass sing.

Fenwick found the tune without thinking, a run of falling notes that climbed back up at the end, the same figure he had played for every spin since his first winter. The ball chattered, hesitated on the lip of a pocket, and dropped. Red. The stranger did not smile. He tucked the notes into his coat, left the revolver where it lay, and walked out into the rain, leaving the bullets behind like coins for a tip.

When the room emptied, Fenwick lifted the revolver and found it unloaded. He set it down beside a single white rose someone had dropped by the till, its petals already browning at the edges. Above the bar the clock ticked on, and the last note he had played hung in the empty room a moment longer than it should have.
