Moon and clouds night sky on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A tattoo covering the upper arm and shoulder shows a pale moon on the left, surrounded by layered clouds in brown, peach and grey. Small white stars appear in dark blue patches of sky between the clouds. The shading is soft and blended, giving the clouds depth, with the moon drawn in more detail than its surroundings.

Nobody in Hallam Cross thought much of the moon until it got stuck. It hung low over the canal basin, pale as a dinner plate, and the clouds drifting past it came in brown and peach from the foundry smoke, layered one over another like sheets on a line. Mary Ashby, who took in washing for the chapel, said the moon had been trying to work itself free for a week.

On the ninth night she climbed the Sheepwash steps with her basket, because the steps were quicker than the road. From the top the sky was a dark blue field pricked with small white stars, and the moon sat in the middle of it with a faint blue rim, like a coin someone had forgotten to pocket. "You'll tear," she told it. That was foolish, but she had talked to wet linen all her life and saw no reason to stop for a moon.
The moon said nothing, but a cloud beneath it shifted, and a thin ribbon of smoke lifted off the works and caught on its edge. Mary saw the trouble plainly. A lamp had been hung too high on the cooling tower, and its glow had snagged the moon like a sleeve on a nail. She went up the iron ladder in her stockings, eased the light loose with one hand, and the moon rolled clear into the blue.
She hung it back up herself every night after that, and the clouds learned to leave a gap for it. If you walk the canal path after the last shift, you will see it sitting clean over the basin, with the washing pinned below and a woman's shawl on the rail, and nobody in the town will tell you who keeps it there.
