Cosmic nebula and planet on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a swirling galaxy with blue and green starfield across the shoulder, a red and orange band, a small ringed planet and a glowing nebula with pillar-like clouds on the upper arm. The shading is smooth and soft-edged, with bright highlights and dark blue depth across the outer arm. Colour ink dominates the piece, and the composition wraps around the arm from the shoulder down.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mind the cattle grid, then, and pull that blanket up, because the road out past Caliche Wells is a long one and the story is longer. My grandmother told this one to me on exactly this stretch of tarmac, with the windscreen full of stars and nothing in the world but the engine ticking. She said the sky had a shoulder once, and a river of blue light ran over it, and the river was not water at all but spilt starlight from a wagon that had lost its driver.

Her daughter, a girl called Ilse Marrow, was sent out with a lamp and a mule to find where the wagon had spilled. She walked for three nights. On the third she came to the rim where the ground turns to cloud, and there stood three great grey pillars of dust, taller than any chapel, glowing orange at the edges like coals that had forgotten to go out. Stars were being made inside them, my grandmother said, slow and quiet, the way bread rises in a cold kitchen.

Ilse took nothing from those pillars. She sat down with the mule and watched a single red star flare up at her feet, so bright she had to shut her eyes. When she opened them the mule was gone, and a small ringed planet hung in the dark above her, turning like a dropped coin. She climbed on, she said, and it was the first time she had ever been lonely and glad of it at once.

So when you reach the junction, bear left, not right. Right goes back to the town. Left goes where the lamp went out.
