Castle, moon and mountains on upper back
Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A castle sits on a rocky mountain base beneath a large pale moon, all set inside a fine dotted triangular outline. The castle and mountains are built from dense shading and stippled texture, with sprigs of leaves along the lower edge. The tattoo is in black and grey on a light skin tone, and the composition is centred on the upper back.

We raised the castle on the third night out of Gallis, when the moon was still low enough to silver the water and Pell was swearing at the chart for lying to us. There was no castle on it. There was Scarth Rock, a blot of ink in the grey, and a line of small dots running from the rock to nothing, the way old chartmakers marked a bearing they did not trust enough to draw solid.

Pell said it was cloud. Mrs Abernethy, our cook, said clouds did not keep lamps lit in their windows, and she was right, because by the second bell we could see them clearly: five lit windows stacked up a tower of black stone, and below them the rock stepping down in ragged shelves to the surf. The dotted line ran straight to the foot of it.
We came in under reefed sail with the lead going every few fathoms. The rock was not empty. Half-buried in the shingle lay the ribs of three ships, and someone had set a lantern on a pole at the landing, freshly oiled, its wick trimmed short the way a careful keeper trims it.
Nobody came down to meet us. When I climbed the steps with the lamp, the great door stood open on a hall of salt-white benches and a table laid for thirty, every plate turned face down. On the flagstone by the threshold someone had scratched a little triangle of dots, and beside it, in a hand I did not know, the words: mind the third step, it lies.
I stepped over it. Behind me the moon came clean from the cloud and laid the castle's shadow across the water, pointing the way we had come. I took the chart from my coat and, with my pencil, added one more dot.
