Moth with dotwork halo and diamond drops on forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large moth with outlined wings, dotted spots and a segmented body sits centrally on the forearm, framed by a dotted circle. Three diamond shapes hang beneath it on a dotted line. The wings use fine stippling and soft shading, while the outlines are bold and solid. The design is in black ink only and sits centred on the skin against a plain background.

Dear Nell,

You will not believe what came in through the vestry window during the vows. Mr Pargeter had just lit the second candle when a moth the size of my palm settled on the lectern, wings open like a pair of prayer books. Nobody noticed but me and the verger, who had the sense to keep his mouth shut. Its body was grey as wet slate, and the spots on its wings were so dark they looked stamped on.
Ada wore her mother's lace, and the moth stayed put while she spoke her promises, as if it had been invited. When she turned to face the congregation, it lifted, circled the chandelier once, and dropped down beside her hem. I swear it touched the three little glass diamonds sewn at her cuff before it slipped out into the rain.
Afterwards at the reception, Tom's brother said a moth at a wedding was bad luck. Ada laughed and said it was the only guest who had come without being asked, and that she intended to keep it in mind. I have been turning that over since. Perhaps luck is only the thing you notice and decide to keep.
Write back and tell me whether the ring of dots the lamplight made on the flagstones was really there, or whether I have been too long in this village. The bells are going now. I must find my gloves.
Love, Maud
