Horse head portrait on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A horse head tattoo runs down the forearm, with the ears and mane at the top and the muzzle at the bottom. The shading is soft and detailed, using smooth gradients and sharp highlights to model the bone structure, eye and nostrils. The piece is entirely black and grey against a dark, textured background.

The last of the big top canvas is folded over the back of the lorry, and Mr Halloran is still counting bolts when you lead Sable out past the empty ring. She drops her head to smell the sawdust, the way she always does, and the old bell cord swings above her like a question nobody wants to answer. Nobody has told the horse yet that the tent is coming down for good.

You were nineteen when you first brushed her, in a field outside Doncaster with rain coming sideways. Her mane was the colour of wet slate then, and it fell across one eye so that she looked at you sidelong, grave and amused, as if she had already decided you were a fool and would be kind about it anyway. Twelve winters later the grey has gone silver at the muzzle, but the same look still meets you across the stall door every morning.

The buyer from a riding school in Kent wants her by Friday. He is polite and leaves his cheque on a hay bale, face up, under a cracked mug. You sit with it for an hour. Halloran comes to the stable door, says nothing, and just leans there until he says, she'd want to go somewhere she can still run, and you tell him that is exactly what you have been trying not to think.

On Friday you walk her up the ramp into the trailer. She stops at the top, ears turned back toward the field where the wagons used to stand, and you wait with your hand flat on her neck until she decides. Then she steps in. Through the slatted gap you watch the streetlamps slide past, and the dark shape of her head against the dusk is the last thing you keep of the circus.
