Mountain and planets in a diamond frame

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

A hand-drawn pen sketch of a mountain peak inside a diamond-shaped outline, with pine trees along the lower edges and a small bird flock in the sky. Above the peak sit a ringed planet, a striped planet, several smaller cratered spheres and scattered stars. A compass-style star sits beneath the point of the diamond. The linework is loose and sketchy with hatched shading on the mountain and trees, and the image uses black ink on pale paper only.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The surveyors had been told the mountain was a lie, a painted backdrop left behind when the colony ships came down. Mara Oduya did not believe the story and did not believe the surveyors either. She had walked the ridge road for three days with a goat named Pell and a cracked brass compass, and on the fourth morning the peak stood up out of the haze exactly where the old charts said it would, sharp as a tooth.

Her grandmother had told her that the planets above it were not planets at all but the lanterns of the people who had gone up before, each one ringed with the dust of their own journey. The striped one was for the woman who had counted birds. The cratered ones were for the men who had dug the wells. Mara had never understood why a lantern would need craters, and she had asked, and her grandmother had said that was the kind of question you carried up the mountain yourself.

She reached the tree line at dusk. The pines grew in close ranks along the lower slopes, hatched dark as if someone had gone over them twice with a fine nib, and above them a flock of small birds turned over the snow and went west all at once, the way a thought goes through a room. Pell lay down. Mara took the compass from her pocket and set it on the flat rock at the foot of the peak, and the needle would not settle north. It pointed up, straight at the striped lantern, and trembled there.

She unbuckled her pack and sat beside the goat to wait for the stars to come out, because her grandmother had also said that a path is only found once someone stops looking for it.
