Geometric mountain with pine trees
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a faceted mountain peak built from interlocking triangles, each filled with parallel hatched lines at different angles. Clusters of pine trees sit across the lower half, drawn as solid black silhouettes that contrast with the hatching above. The composition is a single rounded emblem centred on a plain white background, in black ink only.

Pell had carried the salt up the pass for three winters before the surveyor's boy asked her why the mountain looked like it was folding in on itself. She told him it was not folding, it was keeping its shape the way a good cloth keeps a crease. He did not believe her, and he was right not to, because the peaks above Harrow Gap had been moving since before anyone had a name for them.

The old carters said the mountain was a sleeping woman who had turned her back on the valley, and that every tree on her shoulders was a sentry set there to watch the road. Pell thought this was nonsense, the sort of thing people said to make a cold night go faster. But on the night the snow came early she saw the pines below the ridge all lean the same way, like a row of dark arrows pointing at the pass, and she understood that something was coming up behind them.
She lit the lamp, tied the salt to the mule, and went up to meet it. What she found was a stranger's cart with a broken axle and a child asleep in the straw, and the child's eyes were open, counting the triangles of the rock wall as if they were stairs. Pell lifted the child onto her hip. Behind them the trees stood very still, and the first flakes settled on the hatched stone, line after line, until the whole face of the mountain looked like paper someone had patiently tried to write on.
