Mountains and constellation in a circle on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A circular tattoo shows a mountain range in outline with shaded dotwork along the ridges and edges. A constellation of linked lines and small star shapes sits in the dotted sky above the peaks. The tattoo is in black ink only, centred on the forearm against a plain light background.

The sheep would not come down from the high pasture until every star was counted, and Tomas had never once managed it. His grandmother said that was because he counted with his eyes shut. She said the stars were fixed to the sky with nails, and if you lost your place you had to start again from the Plough.

So he took a pot of ink and a sharpened stick to the flat stone by the hut door, and each evening he tried to put the sky down on rock. He drew the peaks first, because they did not move: the grey shoulder of the Old Man, the pale notch beside it. Then he dotted the ridges with the point of a bone needle, one dot for every stone he could see, the dots crowding thicker where the shadow fell. When the stars came out he joined them with thin lines, the way his grandmother had shown him, and the lines made a shape like a woman carrying a bucket on her head.
The winter the snow closed the pass, the flock wandered off in the night, and Tomas went after them with only the stone in his coat. He found them on the lee side of the ridge, bunched and steaming, and the sky above had cleared so hard that every nail was showing. He stood there until he had counted the whole of his drawing, star by star, and then he walked them home.
At the hut his grandmother was asleep by the fire. In the morning she traced the dots on the stone with one finger and said he had missed one. He had. It was the one he had been standing on, and he pressed it in with the needle while she watched.
