Mountain night sky in a framed box on the upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A rectangular framed tattoo shows a mountain range silhouetted under a night sky filled with small stars and a dark cloud at the top. The mountains and sky are built from fine stippled dots, with denser dots giving shadow and lighter spacing giving the glow of the stars. The image is in black and white, and the framed panel sits centrally on the outer upper arm against a plain background.

Dear Nell, the cloud over the Ness has sat on the peaks three nights running, and I have stopped pretending it is weather. Last night, when the boats were in and Aldo had gone to bed with his boots still on, I went out to the slipway with the lamp and counted stars over the range until my neck ached. Forty-one, then a gap where the cloud thickened like wet felt, then more than I could count. You always said the hills looked like they were holding their breath. The skipper's boy brought me the chart this morning, the one his grandfather drew in pencil, with the soundings in a cramped hand. There is a mark off the north point labelled only with a small star and the word cold. Nobody has ever been able to tell me what that means, and nobody on the quay will say it aloud. I asked Mrs Fairlie and she only pressed her lips together and handed me another bag of onions.

I am going out with the Morag on Thursday, though I have told them I am staying ashore to mind the nets. Don't write back to the harbour office. Write to the lighthouse cottage, the one with the blue door, and tell me whether you can still see the range from your window. If the cloud has lifted, I will know the hills have finished holding their breath, and I will come home with the tide and the story and the fish, in that order.
