Waterfall landscape in a circle on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A circular tattoo shows a waterfall cascading over rocks, with bare and leafy trees framing the scene on either side. The design uses fine dark linework and dense shading to build up the rock textures, water and foliage, with lighter areas left for the falling water. The image is a close, straight-on photo of an inner forearm against a plain grey backdrop, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

Dear Nell,

We are three weeks out from the Cape and the sea has gone the colour of pewter, so I have taken to drawing it. Mr Harrow says I have a joiner's eye rather than a painter's, and he is probably right, but a joiner who cannot draw is only a man with a saw. Yesterday we put in at a bay on the island of St Brannock, a place with no name on the chart, and while the casks were filled at the spring I walked up the gully behind it alone.

The rock there goes up in grey ledges, and the water comes over the top in a single pale rope, then breaks white on the shelves below and runs off through the ferns. The trees lean in on both sides, some still bare as winter, others so thick with leaves they seem to be holding their breath. I stood too long. I had no paper, so I looked through the brass ring of the shade glass, which made the whole view round, and I drew what it showed me on the back of a spare log sheet, pressing hard so the pencil would not skip.

Harrow took one look and asked whether I meant to sell it to the owners as a view of the estate. The men laughed, and I let them. But I have kept it, and when the rain came on this afternoon the sheet went soft at one edge and the falls bled a little into the trees, which I found I did not mind.

I am sending it to you because you always said I never kept anything dry. Put it under the bread tin on the dresser, where the damp does not reach. When I am home, I expect that water will still be coming down those rocks, whether or not anybody stands and watches it.

Your brother, Tom
