Moon and forest inside a triangle on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black triangle contains a large pale moon with stippled craters and a row of dark pine tree silhouettes along its lower edge. The triangle's surface is textured with fine dots, giving a shaded, grainy finish, while the moon is left mostly light. The image is in black and grey and is centred on the tattoo against a soft, blurred background.

Pull your hood forward and shuffle in, because the rain on this market has never once stopped for a teller, so we may as well talk through it. You want to hear how the moon came to sit in the pines? Then listen, because I will not tell it twice to people who chatter over the cheese stall.

Long ago, a lantern seller named Ottilie Penhallow kept a stall at the foot of a steep three-cornered hill where the firs grew thick and black. One wet night the moon, swollen with rain like a sponge, slipped its hook on the sky and tumbled down the slope. It came to rest in the crook between the highest trunks, pale as a plate and pocked where it had knocked against the rocks. It hummed there, sulking, and would not go back up.

Ottilie climbed the hill with her last good lantern under her coat. 'You are blocking the whole sky,' she told it. 'The fishermen cannot find their boats.' The moon said it was tired of being looked at from underneath. So she unpacked her wicks and tallow, lit the lantern, and set it at the moon's feet. The moon, flattered, rose a finger's width and lit the valley for her. In return it scattered a handful of stars across her canvas roof, one for every candle she had sold that year, and they still drip silver there on wet nights.

Next morning the rain cleared and the stall stood dry. Ottilie's canvas was speckled bright, and above the hill the moon hung clean and round, a shade lighter than before. Now pass me that cup, and mind the dog, he has waited for the ending as long as you have.
