Mountain range on an upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a rugged mountain range with several tall, jagged peaks and layered ridges receding into the distance. The linework is fine and hatched, with stippled and shaded areas giving the rock faces depth and texture. The piece is entirely black and grey, and it wraps around the upper arm of a person wearing a grey sleeve against a dark background.

Sit closer, all of you, the lamp is smoking and my one good eye has never liked the far ridges. You will have to let me tell it with my hands instead. Brother Anselm was a copyist here before your grandfathers were born, and the abbot set him a task that winter: draw the seven peaks above the house so the bishop could hang the picture in his hall in the lowlands.

Anselm sat at the north window every morning with his pen and his ink of oak gall. He hatched each ridge line a finger's width apart, then stippled the scree below until his fingers ached. Every evening he held his sheet against the glass and the peaks on it looked like a crowd of men arguing. The real mountains sat quietly under their snow, and they did not argue at all.
In February a shepherd's boy came up through the drifts with frost in his eyebrows and asked why the brother kept drawing the rock so black. Anselm said the rock was grey. The boy laughed and pointed out the window. At dawn the sun came low from the east and every peak threw its shadow down the valley like a dark cloak. Anselm saw then that the mountains were made of their shadows, and all those lines he had laboured over were only the edges of them.
He tore up the first sheet and drew the dark sides alone, and the bishop got a plain picture of nothing but night pooling in the crags. It hangs there still. So when you draw a mountain, brothers, mind where the dark collects in it. The stone will look after itself.
