Mountain landscape with moon on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large landscape tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, showing jagged mountain peaks at the bottom, a pale moon with soft rays of light, and wispy clouds at the top. The linework is fine and detailed, with soft grey shading that gives depth to the mountains and sky. Most of the tattoo is grey and black, with a faint warm tint in the moon.

Dad always swore there were twelve, but he also swore the Guinness at the Ferry Inn was a pint, so I don't trust his arithmetic.

The cloud came up the glen at dawn, grey wool pulled over the lower peaks, and Tomas from the survey party said we would be stuck for three days. He was wrong by one. On the fourth morning the mist tore open above the north face and there was the whole range, every crag as sharp as a broken plate, with the pass we had been trying to reach lying underneath like a dropped ribbon.
We found Dad's cairn at the foot of the col, half buried in snow. Inside the tin was a note in his square capitals: KEEP THE MOON ON YOUR RIGHT SHOULDER AND THE ROCK WILL KEEP YOU HONEST. I laughed until I cried, because I had never once thought to check which shoulder the moon was on.
I have put the tin back where I found it, with a line of my own underneath. The moon is still on my right shoulder, Dad, and I am still walking.
