Mountain landscape with moon on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a mountain range rising under a large pale moon and layered clouds, with a ridge and a forested valley with a winding river or path at the base. The linework is absent, and the form is built from fine, detailed shading that gives the rock, trees and sky strong depth and texture. The palette is entirely black and grey, and the landscape wraps around the upper arm and up toward the shoulder.

The guard at Vell Pass had stamped her permit twice before he looked up from it, and by then Ilse had already counted the switchbacks down to the river and given up on the number. Beyond the barrier the road dropped into a valley of black firs, and the river showed only in pieces, a bright thread that turned back on itself each time the cloud shifted.

Her brother had drawn that valley for her years ago on the back of a seed packet, the ridge a row of sharp teeth, the moon a plain circle he had pressed so hard the pencil tore the paper. He said it was the view from the Halden side, where the birches stopped and the stones began. The guard wanted to know whether she was carrying anything that grew. She told him only the map.

He turned the packet over in his gloved fingers, found nothing on the back but her brother's handwriting, and handed it back. 'Your road is the other one,' he said, and pointed past the barrier to a path so faint it might have been a crack in the shale. She had never seen that path on any map. Under the moon the ridge looked nearer than it had all evening, and the first lights of the far village were pins pushed into the dark.

She stepped through the gap in the wire without looking back at the booth. Behind her the cloud came off the summit in one long pale sheet, and for a moment the whole range stood out clean and grey, every fold of rock lit. Ilse tucked the packet inside her coat, where the torn circle pressed against her ribs, and began to walk down towards the river.
