Anchor, compass and lily tattoo design
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A black and white line drawing of an anchor with coiled rope, a central compass rose with a ribbon banner across it, and a lily with petals curling around the upper right. Stylised waves with spray sit at the lower left. The linework is bold and even, with fine hatching and stippling used for shading, and the design has no colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The rope had been coiled against the sun for three days, and Mattie Cole was not going to be the one to tell Captain Haig why. The Gull Marie lay off the Scillies with her sails furled and her slate sweating in the hold, and every man aboard knew the compass had gone soft in its brass bowl since the squall off Lundy. Haig tapped the glass each morning with a knuckle, and the needle swung like a drunk hunting for the door.

It was Dorrie Penn who solved it, though she had never set foot on a boat. She kept the chandlery on the quay at Padstow and sold lilies from tin buckets to anyone who would stop and buy one. When Mattie came ashore for flour she pressed a stem into his palm and said the anchor held best where the water was kind, not where the chart said it should. He laughed at her. He stopped laughing on the Thursday, when he found her sitting on the harbour wall with the tide running out beneath her boots, sketching the knots that tied the moored boats together.
He fetched the brass compass from the wheelhouse, opened it on a flat stone at the top of the slipway, and waited. The needle trembled, drifted past north, and settled on the chandlery door as if it had been sent there with a letter. Haig swore, then copied the bearing into the log in his tidy hand: one lily, one length of rope, one woman with ink on her fingers.
The Gull Marie never lost her way again. Years later, when Mattie was old and the quay had new paint, the compass still hung behind the counter in Dorrie's shop, and the lilies still stood in their buckets by the door, nodding toward whoever came in from the cold.
