Black line drawing of a sword wrapped in ribbon banners reading 'All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us', with a shield, ring, rose and landscape vignette.

Sword and quote banners line design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A sword runs vertically through the centre of the design, with banners wound around its blade and hilt. Within the crossguard area sits a ring above a shield, a rose and a circular vignette showing hills, a tree and a stone wall. The linework is uniform black outline on white with no shading, and the banners carry the quote in a lettered serif style.

Mab had mended the wall for three summers before the messenger came up the lane with a sword wrapped in oilcloth. Nobody in Hollin Ford had seen a blade that length since the war, and the boy who carried it kept glancing at the stones as if they might bite. "For the knight at the mill," he said. "The one whose shield won't hang straight."

Mab knew Aldous. He had come back from the hills with a hand that shook and a ring he never took off, and he spent his mornings pruning the same apple branch in the orchard below the wall. She weighed the sword in her palms and found it lighter than she expected. Whoever forged it had not meant it only for killing. She carried it through the bracken at dusk.

Aldous was not in the orchard. He stood at the gap in the wall where the wild rose had clambered through, looking at the blue shoulder of the hills, the shield propped against a post beside him. "They want me up there again," he said. "Say the border's loose."

"Then go," Mab said, and laid the sword across his knees. He turned it over slowly, the way a man reads a letter he already knows by heart. Then he slid the ring off his finger, set it on the flat top of the wall, and tucked the rose's last bloom behind his ear. "Tomorrow," he said. "Tomorrow I'll decide what the day is for."
