Music is Life lettering with media player icons on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo reads Music is Life in a handwritten script, with the word Life underlined and set slightly larger, followed by a row of media player symbols: rewind, pause, fast forward and repeat. The lines are bold and solid in black ink, and the lettering is sharp against the skin. The photo is taken close up on the inner wrist against a plain fabric background.

Right, sit down, Carol, you're blocking the fruit bowl. Some of you will remember the summer the Hollis brothers bought a tape deck off the back of a milk float for eleven pounds, and how Mr Penhale found them in the chemistry lab with the fume cupboard shut and the whole room humming like a bee in a jar.

They owned exactly one tape, a Fleetwood Mac album taped off the radio with the disc jockey talking over the quiet bits. Ray would press play and Dennis would lean in, ear to the speaker, waiting for the bass to drop out. When it went wrong they took turns at the buttons: rewind, pause, fast forward, then back again, the pair of them standing in that fume-cupboard hum, saying nothing, letting the tape catch up with them.
Then Ray went off to Bristol to sell insurance, and Dennis kept the deck in a flat above a launderette where the dryers thumped through every verse. He wrote Ray a letter each Sunday with a song title on the envelope. The last one said only, Put it on repeat, Den, and don't let it reach the end. Dennis obliged, and as far as anyone knows that tape is still going round.
So raise a glass to Ray, who never came back for his half of the deck, and to the song they never got to the end of. Somebody find the play button, and for pity's sake don't let the room go quiet.
