The larches came up from the seed merchant in Hexham in a damp sack that smelled of resin and wet string, and Mr Pringle wanted paying before he would untie it. I counted the coins onto his counter while he watched my hands. 'Forty trees on the bank above the mill,' he said. 'You'll not see them past your knee.'

My father kept the ledger on the back shelf of the shop, a green cloth book with a cracked spine. On the inside cover, in his square capitals, he had written the words he lived by: WHERE YOU INVEST YOUR LOVE, YOU INVEST YOUR LIFE. He meant the lathe, the cottage, my mother. I thought it a sermon for a man who never lifted his eyes from the wood. Then the mill-race flooded and carried the marker off my mother's grave, and I found I had nothing to say in the churchyard but the same thing again.

Nineteen summers went by. The village forgot the wager made over the ale, and the larches grew tall and ragged, shedding their needles gold each October. Tom Ashby, who had laughed loudest at the bar, came up the bank last spring with his boy on his shoulders and asked which tree was the first I'd planted. I didn't tell him. I showed him the stump of the one the gale split, and the green shoot already pushing from its root.

The boy slid down and laid his palm flat against the bark, the way you'd touch a sleeping horse. 'What's it called?' he asked. 'Nothing yet,' I said. 'It's still deciding.' We walked down together in the blue dusk while the wood closed quietly behind us.
