Infinity heart with life script
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line tattoo of an infinity symbol, with the left loop shaped as a heart, sits on skin near the fingers. The word life is written in joined cursive script inside the right loop, with the lowercase letters flowing into the infinity line. The ink is a single thin, dark outline with no shading, set against pale skin in a close, slightly soft photograph.

The rope-walk at Carrow Quay ran the length of the harbour wall, and in the hungry spring of the great frost Nell Marrack was still spinning yarn there long after the other women had gone home to their fires. Her father's boat had not come in since Candlemas. The harbourmaster said the sea took what it liked and never gave back a full cable, but Nell had heard the old saying from her grandmother: a line with no end cannot be parted by any storm.

So she did not twist one line. She laid three strands of hemp in a loop that folded back on itself, round and round, the way the fishwives taught her to tie a sheet bend that would hold a drowning man. At one end the fibre doubled into a heart, fat and soft, for the eye where a hand could grip. At the other she left the strands plain. Where the loop crossed itself she worked a single word in black tar thread, because a thing without a name, her grandmother said, is easily carried off.
The boat came in on the morning tide with the mast cracked and two men aboard, and her father's hand was the first to close on the heart of the rope. He pulled, and the line held, and the tar word ran across his knuckles where the loop crossed.
He read it out loud on the wet stones, slowly, the way you read a thing you are not sure you will be given twice: life.
