Music notes and figures on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a large beamed musical note above two solid black pictogram figures, one with a dress-like shape and one without, standing on a stave. A band of thin staff lines wraps around the arm beneath them, with small notes and a jagged sound-wave line. The work is black ink only, with bold solid fills contrasting against fine outlined linework, photographed at a close angle on the arm.

You learned the woods by ear before you learned them by name. Past the last cottage at Hollin Cross, where the lane gave up and the beeches began, the trees hummed on still evenings, and old Mrs Peverell swore it was only wind finding the gaps in the bark. You knew better. You had sat under the largest beech with your fiddle across your knees and heard a note come back to you, a tone higher than the one you had played.

Thea from the mill house came out in the second week of harvest with a loaf wrapped in cloth and a question she did not ask. She sang the note back, flat, then true, and the wood answered her with a second voice a fifth above. You drew the bow across the strings and the two of you walked the edge of the trees for three nights, chalking each answer onto the roadside stones the way a clerk marks a ledger. Every stone a line, every line a place where the air still held.
On the fourth night the wood fell silent and the village came up the lane with lanterns, asking what you had done. You told them nothing had been done. You had only listened. Thea laid her palm flat on the largest stone and felt it tremble, a low hum like a bass string left ringing after the bow has lifted.
Nobody argued when the note began to rise. It lifted above the beeches the way a tall stroke climbs a page, heavy at the head and thin at the tail, and the lanterns tipped back to watch it go. You walked home beside Thea with the fiddle under your arm and her voice still humming in your ribs. By morning the children were chalking that same climbing line on the square, and somebody had drawn two small figures standing on the stave beneath it, holding hands.
