Two small musical symbols on the hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white close-up of the back of a hand showing two small musical symbols in thin, dark linework. The left symbol resembles a pair of beamed notes and the right one a curved stroke, both set side by side near the knuckle. The shallow depth of field leaves the background soft and out of focus, with the hand lit from the side.

Daniel found her beside the stage steps. He had grown heavier and greyer and kept checking his watch as if it might ring for break. "You've still got the Clementi," he said, nodding at the battered book on the lid. "Mr Hollis made me play the same bar eleven times."

She turned the pages until she found it, and there in pencil at the foot of the second stave were two small marks in his ten-year-old hand: a pair of beamed quavers and a curved slur beneath them, the eraser smudge still visible where he had tried to rub them out.
He laughed, then didn't. Somewhere behind them a trestle table clattered and someone shouted for the urn. Daniel sat down on the piano stool without asking, lifted his fingers over the keys, and waited for her to nod before he played the bar, slowly, getting every rest exactly right.
