Geometric arrow with circles on an arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small vertical arrow runs down the arm, with its fletched end at the top and its head at the bottom. Two thin circles sit around the shaft, and a triangle and a few dots add geometric detail. The linework is fine and the tattoo is rendered in solid black ink with no shading, set against plain skin.

The theodolite's ring had cracked somewhere past the salt flats at Orun, so I sighted the road through a brass washer threaded onto a bootlace. Each morning the line ran out ahead of us, straight as chalk snapped on a board, and each evening Dawit copied the bearing into the ledger without looking up. He said a road wants to be straight the way water wants to be low. I took it for one of his jokes until the third week, when the marker stakes began to lean.

We had set them every two miles: a split post, a tin triangle nailed to its face, a painted arrow with its feathers at the top and its point at the bottom. Dawit had drawn a ring around each shaft with a compass so we could read the wind by how far the paint had weathered. The arrows were all tilting the same way now, their points swinging north, though the wind had not changed and the ground was flat as a table.
On the nineteenth day we reached the dot on my plan, a single well with a stone rim cut to a perfect circle. The last arrow pointed straight down into it. Dawit knelt and dropped a pebble. We counted to nine before it touched anything.
He drove the final stake that afternoon, tail feathers to the sky, point to the dark. Then he opened the ledger and wrote the road complete, and under it, in smaller letters, the bearing back.
