The pump froze again on Tuesday, so I've been carrying water from the trough in the yard like Mam used to, and my arms have stopped complaining about it. Dad says the ewes are holding up better than the forecast promised. I've stopped listening to the forecast. The only thing I listen to now is the wireless on the shelf above the feed bins, the one with the cracked dial that you swore you'd fix before you went to Leeds.

I'll admit something. The night you left I stood in the back kitchen and said it was rubbish that you'd taken the good records and left me the hymn book. But last week, when the snow came sideways over the top field and the lamp in the lambing shed kept guttering, I put the radio on for company and found a brass band from Huddersfield playing the tune you used to hum badly while you mucked out. I sat on an upturned bucket with a ewe's head in my lap and cried like a fool, and then I laughed, because the ewe didn't mind.

I'm not writing to be soppy. I'm writing because Dad asked me to tell you the old Ford won't start and he won't say he misses you, so I'm saying it for him. Come home at Easter. Bring the records. The band's on again on Sunday at seven if the signal holds, so put the kettle on and listen with me.
