Script quote and rose on a shoulder
Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a woman's upper chest and shoulder showing a black cursive script that reads Love me for who I am, running diagonally across the collarbone area. A small solid bird silhouette sits above the lettering, and a rose with soft grey shading and darker petal edges sits on the shoulder. The image is in black and grey with a shallow depth of field and a dark background.

The lintel above the postern gate came away in your hands on a wet Tuesday in March, and the mortar dust ran down your sleeve like flour. Mr Haddow from the trust had said to leave it alone until the surveyor came, but you had already scraped the lichen back with a dentist's pick, and there under it, cut shallow into the sandstone, were words. Love me for who I am. The letters leaned as if the mason had been in a hurry or in love.

Nobody in the village had mentioned that the gatehouse once carried a rose beside the inscription, or that a small bird perched above the first word. You found the rose first, its petals worn to soft lumps, then the bird, a single notch no bigger than a fingernail. You sat on an upturned crate with your flask going cold and copied the lines onto squared paper, counting the gaps between the letters the way your grandmother counted stitches.
The surveyor arrived at four with a clipboard and a flask of his own. He read the stone, read your paper, and laughed quietly through his nose. "Lady Eleanor Vane," he said. "Her husband cut the line over the chapel door, and she answered it here, where he could see it every morning he rode out. The parish record says they quarrelled for thirty years and never once left the place."
You put the lintel back that evening, mortar and all, and left the words facing the road. The rain came in sideways and filled the letters, and for a while the little bird sat in a pool of water as though it had landed there to drink.
