Script quote along the collarbone
Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A black script quote reading "I am enough the way I am" runs diagonally across the upper chest and collarbone, with the end of the line reaching toward the shoulder. The thin, flowing letters are rendered in solid black ink with soft edges, and the skin tone around them is even. The photo is taken from behind and above, showing a thin gold chain at the neck and a grey top at the lower edge of the frame.

Brother Anselm had scraped the same sheet of calfskin three times before the bell for Compline, and each time the words came back thinner than before. Abbot Oswy stood over the desk with his hands folded in his sleeves and waited, as he always did, for the ink to be right before he said anything about it. The line was to go above the refectory door, he said, in the slanting hand the old scribes used, so the lay brothers coming in from the fields would read it before they saw anything else.

"What does it say, Father?" asked the miller's son, who had been sent up the hill to learn his letters and was too frightened to hold a quill straight.
"It says what you have been telling yourself since the day you came through the gate," said the abbot. "That you are enough, the way you are, and that nobody has to become someone else before they may sit down at table."
Anselm dipped the pen. The ink took to the vellum as easily as breath on cold glass. He made the long stroke of the first letter and let the last word run toward the edge of the skin, where the margin gave out, because the abbot had insisted the sheet should be left open rather than finished.
When the boy came to read it aloud the next morning, he stumbled on the word way, stopped, and began again from the beginning, slower, as though the sentence had been waiting patiently for him to catch up.
