Nobody at Saltcombe Sands had measured a child since the spring the Cyclone's sign blew off in a gale, so when Dora Pell appeared at the gate with a folding rule and a clipboard, Ollie Trask assumed she was from the council. She wasn't. She was seventy-three, she had run the rides at the pier for thirty summers, and she had come to check the board because she'd noticed the arrow was painted the wrong way round.

'It points back at the car park,' she said, tapping the red shaft with her pen. 'Anyone who reads it is being told to go home. That's not a warning, Ollie, that's a sulk.' He tried to explain that the signwriter had been working from a faded photograph and a bad memory, but she was already unhooking the velvet rope and stepping onto the platform, pulling herself up to the measuring post with the stubborn dignity of someone who had never once been told she was too old for anything.

Her head cleared the line by a good inch. She stood there for a long moment, looking out over the sea and the glittering wheel and the gulls fighting over a dropped cone, and Ollie realised she was not really checking the height at all. She was checking whether the ride still had room for someone who used to be small enough to wave at the operator from the front car.

He changed the sign that evening, painting the arrow out and redrawing it to point the other way, towards the sea. When he went to switch off the lights, he found Dora sitting in the front car with her clipboard on her knee, the bar lowered across her lap, waiting for the motor to catch.
