Nautical flash sheet with crab, anchor and shells
Traditional · Mixed · Flash
A flash sheet of four nautical designs on a light fabric background: a scallop shell at the top left, an anchor with a rope and waves at the top right, a crab with a heart-shaped body at the lower left, and a conch shell at the lower right. The crab is rendered in red with a dotted border and shaded claws and legs, while the anchor and both shells use grey and blue-grey shading with dark outlines. The designs are arranged loosely with space between them, shown flat and evenly lit.

Dear Tom, the crab that lives under the harbour steps has taken to sitting on the bottom step each evening, claws raised, as though it has been sent down to meet the boats. Mum says it is a sign. I say it is a crab with bad manners and a soft spot for fish heads.

The boat is still on the slip at Porth Gwen where you left her. Dad had the anchor out of the shed, the old one with the rope worn to hair, and I scrubbed the weed off it on Sunday while the waves came up grey under the wall. I found the scallop shell you pressed into the mud years ago, the one with ribs like a fan. I have put it on the windowsill beside the conch, which still hums when you hold it to your ear, though Mum says that is only your own blood.
Mr Pascoe came round with the tide tables and asked whether you would be home for the August boat fair. I told him I did not know. He said the crab would know, and laughed, and then he went quiet, looking at the anchor propped against the door. Nobody on this island says the word lost if they can help it.
So I am writing it down plainly: come home, or send word. I will keep the crab fed and the lamp lit at the end of the pier. If the crab has gone by the time this reaches you, it means the tide has turned, and you should row in anyway.
