Heart-shaped dreamcatcher with feathers
Mixed · Flash
The drawing shows a dreamcatcher with a heart-shaped hoop, fine radiating web lines and a small heart at the centre of the web. Three feathers hang below, shaded in grey and black with soft hatching, and strings of beads and coral and blue accents hang from the base. The design sits on a plain pinkish background with the colour limited to small accents.

The third feather refused to sit straight, so Ada Penrose threw the netting over her knee and swore at it in the old dialect her grandmother had used on herring lines. The kitchen at Harrowgate smelled of tar and cold ash. Outside, the Mirrel Sound was grinding against the breakwater, and the lamps on the boats had been lit for an hour.

Mrs Garrow had brought the willow hoop herself, bent into a heart because her son Tobias had always said a heart was the only shape that could not be steered off course. Ada strung it with waxed linen, running fine lines from the rim to a small heart at the centre, each one tighter than a hair. She set in beads of coral glass and blue, pieces she had prised from a box that came ashore off a wrecked trader, and let a few strings hang from the base where the wind could find them.
The feathers took three nights. They were gull wings, grey at the tips and black near the quill, and she hatched the shadow into them with a steel nib until they looked like they had only just come down from a height. Every morning she checked the web by lamplight. Most nights it was empty, but on the fifth she found a single strand of fog caught at the centre, pale and cold, and when she touched it she saw a boat coming home through the reef with a lantern at the bow.
She did not tell Mrs Garrow what she had seen. She hung the charm above the door of the cottage on the cliff road, where the feathers swung out over the step, and went home past the harbour without looking at the water. In the morning a gull landed on the breakwater with a grey wing folded wrong, and Ada, already halfway to the net shed, stopped and laughed out loud at herself for counting it.
