Nautical sleeve design with compass and ship

Forearm · Colour · Flash

A coloured pencil drawing of a sleeve-shaped tattoo design on paper, with a compass rose at the top and a nautical scene running down the arm. The scene includes swallows, a sailing ship, stylised waves, jellyfish, manta rays, an anchor and a treasure chest, with handwritten colour and subject notes in the margins. Outlines are drawn in coloured pencil with simple hatching, and the palette uses red, orange, yellow, indigo, blue, green and black.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the fish crates. The Mary Ellen Swale was a barque out of Porthgwidden, and she carried more than salt the year her compass went mad. Captain Orla Penhale had the brass rose bolted to the binnacle herself, red points for the four quarters, and she swore on her mother's grave it had never once pointed wrong.

Then one grey morning off the Scillies the needle spun like a dropped coin and would not settle. Her mate wanted to turn back. The cook wanted to pray. Orla just looked up, and there were three swallows skimming the bow with the low sun behind them. Swallows don't fly far out to sea unless the land is close, everyone knows that. So she followed them.

The birds led her through a bank of cloud the colour of old butter, and beyond it the water went blue, then deep indigo. Grey manta rays rose and turned beneath the hull like kites on a string, and jellyfish drifted past lit green from below. On the seabed lay a treasure chest with its lid thrown back, and an anchor as old as the church stood guarding it.

They hauled that anchor up after the tide turned and found the chest bone-dry and empty, save for one brass point from a compass, painted red. Orla hung it above the stove, and the needle has never spun since. Mind you, the swallows come back every spring, and any sailor who sees three of them flying low over the water is expected to buy the next round.
