Nautilus spiral tattoo on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A nautilus-style spiral sits at the top of the design, shaded in yellow, orange and pink, and it flows down into long feather-like shapes filled with teal and blue. Bold black outlines define the spiral and the trailing strokes, with thin pink and yellow streaks running through the lower section. The design fills most of the forearm against a blurred background of a poster and a wall.

You have the shell in your coat pocket before the cage reaches the surface, warm from your hand and gritty with shale. Nobody in Glynhafod believes a sea creature can be buried under four hundred feet of hillside, but your father swears the spiral came out of the Ffaldau seam, where the roof dripped like a tap nobody would fix. He tells you to put it back. You don't.

For a week it sits on the windowsill of your mother's kitchen, turning the light from the tips into bands of gold and rust. Nia Rees from the top row comes to borrow a shovel and stops to look. She runs a thumb along the ridges and says they look like the feathers of the pigeons that roost in the chapel gutter, all combed the same way by a wind that never reaches the valley floor. You tell her the shell built itself one room at a time, sealing off each old chamber behind it as it grew. She says that sounds like a lie you'd tell a girl to get her to stay for tea.
On Sunday you climb the chapel steps with the shell in both hands. The pigeons lift when you reach the gutter, and the morning comes through their wings in long streaks of teal and pink. You tilt the stone so the spiral catches the sun, and for once the pit whistle doesn't call anyone anywhere.
When the bell starts you go down the hill and leave the shell on the lip of the old shaft, where the coal dust has settled like frost. Somebody will find it, or the rain will. Either way it has already told you what it came to say, which is that a place can keep growing and still leave its empty rooms behind.
