Anchor with heart-shaped ring design

Colour · Flash

A solid purple anchor design with a heart forming the ring at the top and a small dot at the end of each arm of the crossbar. The shape is a flat silhouette with no shading, and the purple ink fills the whole image against a plain white background. The design is centred and fills most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The smith at Staithes would not cut a heart into iron for nothing, so Nell paid him in eggs. Six dozen, brown ones, carried down the cliff path in a basket that bruised her wrist. He said a heart was a foolish thing to put on something meant to hold a boat still in a gale. She told him that was exactly why it needed one.

The Brenda Kell went out on the ebb with her anchor hung from the bow, ring up, the way every boat hangs it. Nell stood on the harbour wall until the sail was a fleck and then nothing at all. Winter came through the village with its mouth open. Gulls worked the fish heads off the slip, and every evening she walked to the end of the pier to count the masts that were not his.

In March a lobster man called Ruddock came in with his net heavy and fouled, and inside it was an anchor furred with weed. The ring was still sharp. Nobody on the quay said anything for a long while. Ruddock only took off his cap and said the Scar had kept the rest of the boat, and that the anchor had come up cleaner than anything else he had hauled all year.

Nell carried it up the path on her shoulder, heavier than she expected, and hung it on the nail above her door with the heart turned outward. Anyone coming up from the village would see it first, before the smoke or the shutters or her own face, and she meant to be standing under it when they did.
