Needle and thread line tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black needle sits near the upper forearm, with a single continuous line of thread looping and curving down the arm towards the wrist. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the design is rendered entirely in black ink. The photograph is black and white, with the tattoo centred on the forearm and the background dark and cropped.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm will not let you touch the gospel until you have sewn a thread through a practice sheet forty times without a knot. He says the thread must be allowed to wander, because a line pulled too tight tears the leaf. So you sit at the long bench in the bindery with the window open on the cloister garden, making your stitches, while the grey light falls across the vellum like cold milk.

The book is older than the abbey. Its spine has split at the fourth gathering, and a mouse once found the glue. Anselm sets the needle between your fingers and tells you the sewing is only half the work; the other half is listening to where the thread wants to go. You pull, and it slackens. You let it run in a long loop across the board and over the edge of the bench, and the loop never crosses itself. Anselm watches that single line for a long time and says nothing.

On the last evening, the bell for compline rings while the glue is still soft. You leave the needle standing in the sheet, its eye still threaded, so the work will not be lost in the dark. In the morning the gathering sits square and whole, sewn with one unbroken run from the first page to the last. Anselm closes the board, runs his thumb along the spine, and does not ask you to cut the thread.
