Fine line needle and thread on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a forearm with a fine line tattoo of a sewing needle and a single continuous thread that loops across the skin and down towards the wrist. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the image is greyscale. The arm fills the frame diagonally, with denim shorts blurred in the background.

Nell had been mending the hem of the reeve's wife's green coat when the thread snapped for the third time that morning, and she swore at it quietly, the way her mother had taught her, so the priest would not hear. The school reunion was held in the old schoolroom that winter, because the new hall had flooded. Thirty years had passed since they had sat at the same long desks. Tom Garrow came in with his collar turned up and a bag of apples, and he set down beside her a sampler she had stitched as a girl, its letters faded to the colour of weak tea. A single thread ran out of the corner of it, loose and grey, and it ran across the floor and under the door.

Nobody in Ashby would cut a thread that had been left hanging, so they followed it. It led them down the lane, past the mill and the drowned orchard, to the sea wall where Tom had kept his father's boat. The thread had been waiting there, tied to a cleat, and it did not break when they pulled it.

Nell took the needle from her pocket and threaded it with the loose end. She sat on the wall and sewed the hem of her own coat closed, one small stitch after another, until the loop of grey closed back on itself and held.
