Traditional butterfly on an arm
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A butterfly with spiralled antennae sits centrally, with a dark body and wings in red, brown, teal and yellow. Bold black outlines define each wing segment, with stippled dot shading near the wing edges and solid fills elsewhere. The design fills the frame against a plain skin background, with a red garment visible at the right edge.

The hall at Carrick Mill had a floor that rang like a drum when you stamped on it, and on Saturdays old Tobin Reay played his fiddle until the boards gave up. Nobody asked Nell Marrin to dance. She was the widow's girl, and she came to the hall with a gold thread stitched through her hem that caught the lamplight, and folk said a thing that bright was bound to bring bad luck.

One October night a butterfly came in through the open door, red and brown with teal along the edges of its wings and two feelers curled up like new bracken. It settled on the fiddler's bow. Tobin stopped playing, and the whole hall waited. Nell said, plainly, that the creature wanted a partner, and nobody laughed at her.
The butterfly lifted, circled the lamp three times, and came down on the bench beside the miller's son, who had been too shy to cross the floor all year. Tobin began again, slower this time, so that a thing with such small feet could keep up. The miller's son stood, held out his hand, and Nell took it without looking at the gold in her hem.
They danced until the lamps guttered. When the first grey came through the windows, the butterfly was folded shut on the sill, and the fiddle had gone quiet. Tobin said afterwards that the moth had asked nothing of anyone, only that the tune go slow enough for it to follow.
