Neo-traditional woman portrait with headdress on thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A woman's face wearing an ornate headdress with feather-like shapes, teal beads, pearl strands and a red and teal patterned band is tattooed on the thigh. Bold black outlines and smooth colour shading in teal, red, mustard and brown give the face and ornaments a dimensional, illustrated look. The design fills the frame and is centred on the leg, with a little skin visible around the edges.

Nell had been sewing the same brass-tipped feathers since Tuesday, and the wardrobe mistress had stopped pretending she wasn't counting. The headdress for the Sunday matinee was due by six. It sat on the workbench like a bird that had landed and refused to leave, its gold-brown plumes fanned over a band of red and teal triangles, three glass beads hung from the crown on wire the colour of old pennies.

"Leave the pearls alone," said Marguerite, who had dressed the company for thirty years and believed nothing in a theatre was finished until it had been dropped at least once. "The stalls only see the top of it. Stop fussing."
Nell didn't stop. She had found the pattern in a shoebox of tatty programmes from the old Hippodrome, a sepia photograph of a dancer whose headdress nobody had bothered to record. Nell had copied it from the photo onto squared paper, counting the beads row by row, and she couldn't let the crown sit lopsided the way the original must have, even if it was only a rehearsal costume from 1931 that had been pulled out for a revival nobody asked for.
At eleven the building went quiet except for the radiators knocking. Nell pinned the last string of pearls, held the headdress up to the work lamp, and saw that the light caught the teal beads exactly as the photograph had. She took a pencil from her apron and wrote a name on the inside of the band, small and careful, where no one in the audience would ever look. Then she carried it up the iron stairs to the flies, the beads knocking softly against the rail, and hung it where the morning light would find it first.
