Neo-trad woman portrait with headdress on forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A stylised woman's face sits at the centre of the design, wearing a gold feathered headdress, large teal earrings and a layered necklace, with a small ankh-like mark on her cheek. Bold black outlines define the features and ornaments, with smooth shading on the skin and face. Teal, red and gold dominate the palette, and a second eye-like motif appears at the top and lower edge, filling the curve of the limb.

Dear Nell, you will laugh when you hear what Mr Pryce has had me doing all week. The booth at the back of the Whitsun fair needs a new front, and he wants a woman on it, a proper one in a feathered headdress like the Egyptian plate in the library book. I told him I paint signs, not saints. He said the children never bought a ticket for a saint, they bought one to be looked at.

So I have done her in teal and red and enough gold leaf to pay for my boots. The earrings are as big as saucers and the necklace sits on her collarbone in three rows, because Pryce wanted it to catch the lamps. There is a little ankh on her cheek that he insisted on, for luck, though I would have put a star. Her eyes I did last, and twice. The first pair looked sleepy, like a woman who has told too many fortunes. I wiped them off with a rag and turned the second pair out towards the lane, and they have never once looked anywhere else.

Yesterday a boy from the mill came by with his sister and asked if the lady in the booth could tell them whether it would rain. I said the lady was only paint. He pulled a face and said, then why is she watching us? The awning had been flapping all morning and I had not noticed how the light caught the eye on the bottom edge until he pointed at it.

I have decided not to climb up and correct her. Pryce is paying me by the day and the fair opens Saturday, and a bit of uncanny never hurt a takings sheet. Besides, I would rather she watch the lane than the cash tent. Come up on the train if you can. Bring your own brushes. I am told the gold needs a second coat before the weather turns, and I have a feeling she will tell us when.
