Woman portrait with feather and blue flowers on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A woman's face is shown in a neo-traditional portrait, framed by dark braided hair, blue five-petal flowers, a grey feather and a patterned orange headband. Bold black outlines define the features, with smooth shading on the skin and hair. Bright blue, orange, green and red ink dominate the palette, and the design wraps around the outer thigh.

The sign writer had run out of green by the time she reached the chin, so Mab mixed what was left of the bottle with a dab of lamp black and kept going. Dolly Carrow's caravan door had to be finished before the fair left Hexham on Thursday, and Dolly had been clear that she wanted a face on it, not another advertisement for hot peas.

The woman Mab painted had no name at first. Dolly called her Nell after a dead aunt, then decided Nell sounded like a hymn and dropped it. Mab gave her a grey feather tucked above one ear, blue five-petalled flowers pinned into hair the colour of wet slate, and a headband striped orange and red like a Cornish sunset over the moor. She painted a band of green across the eyes because the old travelling men always had, and because it made the eyes look as if they knew which tent pegs were loose.
Dolly came out of the wagon at dusk with a flask in one hand and stood in the lamplight a long while. She didn't say it was good. She said the woman on the door looked more like someone who had somewhere to be than anyone she had ever met on the circuit, and then she went back inside without another word.
They pulled out before dawn, the horses breathing steam in the lane. Mab sat on the step with her paints in her lap and watched the lay-by at Corbridge slide past, the painted face turned to the road ahead, the green stripe catching the first grey light as if it had been waiting all night to be seen.
