Never grow up silhouettes with red feather
Mixed · Flash
A pen and pencil drawing of a tattoo design on notebook paper, showing four black silhouettes of figures in flight or falling, with the words Never grow up written in a curve beside them. A large red feather with shaded red and dark red outlines forms the base of the composition, with its quill rising towards the lettering. The black ink is solid and the red is lightly shaded, with the drawing set against a plain cream page.

Mrs Abernethy had sold the Gilbey boys their kites for thirty years, and she knew the difference between a child who wanted to fly and one who had already decided to. The Pell twins were the second sort. They came up Tanner's Lane one wet October with a crate of pigeon feathers and a plan to jump off the chapel roof, and they wanted her red ribbon for the tails.

She gave them the ribbon, and a lecture about wet slate, and then she gave them the red feather, the long one from the back of the hen that had gone broody on the church gate. "Tie it to the tallest one," she said. "The wind has to know who to follow."
Nobody got hurt that autumn, which the vicar counted as a miracle and Mrs Abernethy counted as luck and good knots. The twins grew, one went to sea and one to the mills, and neither of them ever flew again. But the feather stayed in the drawer of the shop counter, and every year at the first gale a boy from the village would come in with his hands in his pockets and ask her, quietly, whether it was still there.
She always said yes. She never said the thing she knew, which was that the wind had only ever wanted the feather, and the boys had simply been light enough to be carried.
